Why fad diets don't work
Millions of us around the world read them, believe them, attempt them but we always end up failing and wishing we had never spent all that time, money and effort on them. No I’m not talking about relationships; I’m talking about fad diets. So why do we keep falling for the hundreds of fad diets out there? Read More…
Realistic self help tips
There are pages and pages of self help stuff out there. Some of it's a bit fluffy. Some may be a bit impractical and bares no real relevance to you or your life. Different people write it from cross legged gurus floating a couple of inches off the floor, guys in expensive suits with orange skin and white teeth through to professors who have had their head in books all of their life. Here's my take on it! Read More…

Fat man walking
I first met John (not his real name) at his office. A friend of his had told him about me and what I was doing with home fitness, so he called me up for a chat. John was a clown. No, I don't mean a bit of a joker but an actual clown. He did losts of carnivals, shows and events. More a corporate clown than a kids party type. He was also the clasic clown hiding behind a painted smile. He was fat and struggling with it. Unhappy and living alone. Read More…
How to start exercising (right now!)
If you are reading this you are probably at home thinking of starting an exercise program. Maybe searching for a DVD, gym, equipment or clothing. How long will you do this for? How many excuses not to do it will you come up with? "It's not the right time, didn't realise it would be that expensive, it's too far away, that looks too hard, Mmm that sounds ok but I'll start it in a couple of weeks". The list goes on. Read More…
So what is fitness anyway?
Well first of all here's what it's not. It's not a once every now and again thing you do after new year or before your holidays. It's not something you do just to look good, that's an added benefit of being fit. I'm not talking here about fitness for running a marathon or being an olympian (not in this post anyway), but simple functional fitness and being active enough to cope with whatever life throws your way. Are you Spiderman?
This morning as I was hanging the washing out (yes I can look after myself) I walked straight in to a spider web. The dam thing was face height so I took the whole lot with me! Everything I was carrying went up in the air as I did my panic dance around the garden. After my screams had ceased I looked for the culprit. Little Fred was hanging by a thread from the fence just out of reach. I went to make a coffee. Sometime later I passed Fred again. His web was rebuilt where he had finished up earlier that morning. The stepper under the stairs!
The other morning I was having coffee with a friend and couldn't help but notice a very nice (and expensive looking) step machine. It was an open plan lounge with a central staircase. I found it ironical that the stepper was infact stored under the stairs! "How long have you had this?" I asked. "Oh about 6 months now" was the reply. "Do you use it much?" The classic answer came back; "Well the first couple of weeks I did but but now I can't be bothered to drag it out. Seemed like a good idea at the time though." Read More…
Why affirmations don't work (sometimes)!
You can say them till you're blue in the face. Write them down and stick them all over the house. But if you don't feel them it's a pretty pointless practice! Read More…
"I don't have the time to exercise". Ah but you do!
Now that can be a bit of a real problem these days given many peoples hectic lifestyles. It's also about what you think exercise is. Sure, if you consider it to be going to the gym or a class, then it might be a bit of a problem to find the time. Look at it this way...... Read More…

The on off gym bunny.
I was talking to a mid 30's female, an on off gym bunny if ever i saw one! Her life revolved around the gym and shopping for cool gym wear. She was hooked on exercise. Good for you I thought, a very focused woman taking care of her health. As the conversation went on It became clear that wasn't the case! Read More…
Looking through the blue window.
The other morning was a typical English one. I looked out of the lounge window and saw a nice blue(ish) sky with a hint of sunshine poking through. I walked to the other side of the house to make my early morning cuppa. The sky was grey in there! Mmm I thought, what is the weather going to be like today? I sat in the lounge and planned my day. When I had finished my tea I had spent 10 mins looking at the blue and my mind was in a positive mood. Which window would you have looked out of? Read More…
