The stepper under the stairs!

Paul Knight - Tuesday, September 28, 2010

The other morning I was having coffee with a friend and couldn't help but notice a very nice (and expensive looking) step machine. It was an open plan lounge with a central staircase. I found it ironical that the stepper was infact stored under the stairs! "How long have you had this?" I asked. "Oh about 6 months now" was the reply. "Do you use it much?" The classic answer came back; "Well the first couple of weeks I did but but now I can't be bothered to drag it out. Seemed like a good idea at the time though."

How many times have I seen this in my lifetime! People getting sucked in to buying crap they don't need in an effort to look like somebody that they are not! Well done the marketing people but wake up everybody else!!

What happened before high tech fitness?

What happened before lycra, body pump classes, pulse meters, £180 trainers, energy drinks or body fat calipers? Why can't you do it without wearing the 'right' stuff or using the 'right' equipment? Why do we go to classes fronted by robot instructors who shout 'whoop come on' when you least expect it and scare the living crap out of you? What happened before we became virtually active but physically redundant!

We climbed trees,( and fell out of them without trying to sue the farmer for not displaying the appropriate warning signs) rode bikes, joined sports clubs because we enjoyed it not just because we might earn money from it. I'm not just talking about kids here either. It was spit and sawdust gyms, jogging and eating proper food. Simple things with results. No pressure to conform. Just movement!

Back to basics

Lets start getting back to basics and start moving again. Forget what you are wearing, what equipment you have, what protein shake is in the cupboard.......just do it! That sounds like a good catch phrase, wonder if anyone is using it? (joke)
