The on off gym bunny.

Paul Knight - Tuesday, May 18, 2010

I was talking to a mid 30's female, an on off gym bunny if ever i saw one! Her life revolved around the gym and shopping for cool gym wear. She was hooked on exercise. Good for you I thought, a very focused woman taking care of her health. As the conversation went on It became clear that wasn't the case!

Yes she used the gym but that was all, and inconsistently. A few weeks training and then nothing. Why the up and down training I asked?

"I get bored" was the reply. Then do something different and mix it up a bit said I. "But I only like going to the gym, I can't stand going to the classes they put on there and I can't afford to go to other classes. I pay a membership at my gym and it's all inclusive". It was then I let on what I did for a living! Intrigued by what I had to say, she asked for a consultation over coffee the next day. No, I wasn't fishing for clients, it just turns out that way sometimes, honest. After the chat the next day, this is what she had....

  • A 2 days a week gym program. Previously only working to what she got from the gym staff. A one routine fits all approach. She didn't want to give up her time there as she enjoyed the atmosphere and the friends she had made.
  • A 2 days a week outdoor program. She cycled to the park and did her circuit training routine there, then cycled home.
  • A 2 days a week yogacise routine. Stretching and toning at home in the lounge.
  • We met twice a month to catch up and review.

She was no longer an on off gym bunny. Her brain was stimulated and therefore her body was too. Yes she still had time off from the exercise. A couple of days here and there when she wanted a break, but not a couple of months at a time like before.

Changing the things you do and the places you do them keeps you coming back for more.
