My last gym visit

Paul Knight - Friday, April 23, 2010

Yes I do go to the gym from time to time, it helps to remind me why I don't go the gym!

It's a beautiful evening outside, it's 5.30pm. I'm on the rowing machine warming up my bones before I teach my Aqua Aerobics class. Infront of me are a bunch of young men continually bumping into each other by the free weight section. It has huge mirrors and they are too busy looking at themselves and not where they are going. There is a bored looking personal trainer standing next to his client on a jogging machine going through the usual tips he's been saying all day. The client has paid for his services on top of the membership fees they have already paid to use the jogger. The gym is thumping from the sound system linked to the MTV channel on the wall. There are rows and rows of bikes, joggers, steppers and the like infront of 4 huge TV screens with no sound (except MTV). Most people are wearing ipods as the music sucks! One man is reading the paper as he cycles at 1 mile an hour and another two are on the phone trying to shout over the music. The young gym instructor is busying himself cleaning and the manager is pulling her hair out over figures and statistics for the next group meeting. Pressure is always on to meet the targets set by head office. Then there's the fella in the corner doing his back no good while he's doing an exercise wrong. I'm out of here!

I have been the gym manager, instructor and personal trainer. I have also been the member. Not anymore! Many people love it, tell me why?
