How to make your aerobic workout more fun!

Not looking forward to your next aerobic workout? Try these instead.

Fun ways to move your butt!

First off lets take a look at what 'aerobics' is. For many it will still conjure up images of lycra, complicated routines and banging music. Not so. For others it's plodding around the streets on a jog. Swimmimg lengths or cycling. All the things we have been 'educated' to understand the word means. By the way, nothing wrong with doing any of the above. All I'm doing here is opening up a few more options most folks don't consider.

Aerobics simply means exercise with oxygen. Allowing your body to produce it's energy through the circulation of oxygen delivered to the working muscles via the blood stream pumped there by your heart and lungs. This helps keep you going for longer and done frequently enough will help to produce a fitter leaner you. Let's leave it at that for now.

So keeping your butt moving for lets say 30 mins at a time is considered aerobic. As I said above, the usual things suggested or tried are a class, jogging, biking or swimming. For most of us each of the above can become a bit boring after a while. What we need is a bit more 'fizz' sometimes. That's the main reason 'zumba' has taken the world by storm. It's fun and it doesn't feel like exercise. As an ex sports teacher, I recommend to my clients and friends a bit of fun sports for their aerobic content in their workout regime. As the olympics 2012 are fast approaching, I have a feeling more will be tempted to participate in something once they have seen it on TV. Here's 3 suggestions I do for myself and the groups I work with:

  • Racketball. A game very few know about. It's squash with a bigger ball and easier racket.
  • Touch rugby. Non contact fun with a rugby ball.
  • 5 a side football. Most leisure centres have a league so get some mates together and join in. Failing that use jumpers for goalposts down the local park.

How to put it together.

Here's a suggestion for you and for any trainer reading this. After a simple warm up play touch rugby for 15 mins. then a 10 mins sit ups routine. 15 mins football then a 10 mins squats and press ups routine. Cool down and stretch. Fun, simple and effective.

Google the opportunities in your area or put it together yourself. You're not trying to play proffesionally, just having fun running around with a ball!

If you want some ideas just drop me a line! There's loads more where that came from.
